Dear Editor,
It should be a delight to assist fellow Guyanese to cope with the high cost of living. The BCCI is well placed to assist the government to bring relief to the Berbice people’s transportation cost. The Berbice people are due this relief. I can’t understand why this company is employing these bureaucratic tactics to stall this subsidy to the people.
I have read their response and I am unconvinced about their arguments with regards to their becoming bankrupt. We all should want our companies to do well as this is best for all.
We want investors to enjoy profits as this will spur on more investment in our country. But this particular project is questionable. If the then government were investing their personal monies, I can’t see them agreeing to give controlling powers to someone who invests less than them.
So why is the BBCI being controlled by those who paid less to the investment? Why is the NIS, who is the largest single investor (Guyanese people money), not holding controlling powers? It’s these type of transactions that raise concerns about cronyism in Guyana.
There should be new legislation to stop this type of investment of public money. If it wasn’t for the government change, the same would have happened at the Marriot. I view this as a transfer of public assets to private hands at no cost. Criminal? Probably!
I would like to propose a solution to this situation that will cut out the BCCI entirely from participating in this relief to the people. Government should consider an agreement with the local council who can act as an agency where tickets/receipts, issued within the last ten days by the bridge company, can be presented and the subsidy given directly to ticket holders.
Monthly auditing can then be carried out on the account of the council. This way the bridge company will not have anything to quarrel about. The Berbice people – even though most of them didn’t vote for change- can now enjoy the benefit of true change.
