Dear Editor,
Recently Mr. Ramjattan was recorded saying that he wants bring forward the 2am curfew to 12am. This is a total waste. The real issues to stop crime need to be addressed such as eliminating corruption from the police force, increasing police salaries, providing proper training to tackle crime, imposing stricter penalties for crime, solving more crimes, increasing capacity of the force by developing state of the art facilities and equipment, etc. There is an ever ending list of things that need to be done to tackle crime in Guyana and a curfew stands at the bottom of the list (if it does make the list). A curfew gets people home earlier, it does not stop crime. Criminals rob and kill anytime of the day or night. A curfew doesn’t stop them. Also a curfew does not stop people from drinking alcohol (as mentioned by Mr. Ramjattan). They will just drink it earlier!
At the end of June 2015 the Guyana Police Force recorded a 9% increase in serious crimes in comparison to the same period in 2014. At the end of July 2015 a 10% increase in serious crimes was recorded in comparison to the same period in 2014. A total of 79 murders were recorded at the end of June 2015 in comparison to 69 murders at the end of June 2014, an increase of 14%. A total of 94 murders were recorded at the end of July 2015 in comparison to 80 murders at the end of July 2014, an increase of 18%.
There has been an increase of 74% in the number of reports of rape with 207 reports at the end of June this year compared to 119 for the same period last year. Break and Enter and Larceny and Burglary have shown an overall increase of 9%.There has been an increase of 68% in the number of reports of rape with 243 reports at the end of July this year compared to 145 for the same period last year. Break and Enter and Larceny and Burglary have shown an overall increase of 9%.
This information clearly indicates that there has been an overall increase in crimes in Guyana compared to the same period last year. Mr. Ramjattan and the new Government need to step up and solve the real issues that cause crimes.
I take this opportunity to call on Mr. Ramjattan and the new Government to tackle the real issues that cause crimes (as listed above). There are also other issues that cause crime such as high unemployment rate, high illiteracy rate, poverty, peer pressure, etc. The police are unable to tackle crime since they are underpaid and underequipped. Many policemen turn criminals as the evidence suggests. This is due to a better package as a criminal; more incentives.
If the crime rate does not decrease migration will continue to escalate. I am a young professional willing to stay and work to develop my country but the way things are going I’m seriously considering to migrate and there are numerous other young people I know who share the view. When our brilliant young minds migrate, the country only be left with the illiterate, which of course will result in increased crimes.
