An incomplete police file and outstanding ballistics report have been stalling the commencement of a Preliminary Inquiry (PI) into the death of Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) engineer, Trevor Abrams.
Having been on remand for four months, murder accused Steven Prescott, also known as ‘Assassin’ Rayon Paddy along with Orin Arthur will face City Magistrate Judy Latchman, early next month when the matter comes up again.
The trio is accused of murdering Abrams on February 21, last, at Little Diamond, East Bank Demerara.
Abrams, 32, of Lot 131 Samatta Point, East Bank Demerara, was riddled with bullets on February 26, last, when armed men ambushed him and opened fire on his vehicle.
The missing components have seen the matter being frequently adjourned and the men being further remanded to prison.
When the accused made their first court appearance back in April, the Prosecution had informed the court that investigations were still in progress.
Now, four months later, the files are still incomplete. According to Police Prosecutor, Sergeant Neville Jeffers, several statements are outstanding from the police, while he still awaits the results of the ballistics report.
The constant adjournment of the matter has caused Attorney, Nigel Hughes to vent his frustration.
The lawyer is contesting that the court should proceed with the evidence it has, while placing emphasis on the time the men have been on remand.
As a result, Magistrate Ann Mc Lennan stressed that the court will be forced to start the trial without the file.
A total of 20 witnesses are expected to testify when the PI begins.
In addition, Rayon Paddy and Orin Arthur are jointly charged with the murder of Sterling Products Limited guard, Wilfred Stewart, which occurred on December 24, 2014, at Providence, East Bank Demerara.
Stewart of Graham’s Hall, East Coast Demerara, was shot dead by gunmen who forced their way into the Sterling Products Limited Compound.
The men are currently before the courts on several other charges ranging from possession of illegal firearm, possession of narcotics, abduction and robbery under arms. The men allegedly posed as cops and carried out robberies at Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara, on March 18, last.
