Depression! A plea for help

Dear Editor,
Just a few days ago a physically healthy young man whom I know showed his friends some carbon tablets. Jokingly, it seemed, he said “I going and kill me self.” That was his last effort to find a life line but his friends laugh… Now the joke is replaced with tears and fond memories of the joker because he was smiling… He died hours after hugging his father one last time.
Students of a city secondary have every reason to return to school but one of the crew will be missing. Last evening, a 16 year old girl left home as happy as ever…. She never went back home… She, too, drank a poisonous substance. Though they tried their best, medical professionals at the Georgetown Public Hospital could not grab her from the jaws of the excruciating death that eventually silenced her cries. “ I don’t want to die, please don’t tell my father what I did.” He is overseas working out ways to return to mourn over the loss of his baby girl…Her issue? She was having ‘home problems’.
Yesterday, too, another young lady from the same school attempted to end her happy facade of bottled up anguish of family and friends rejection. She is still fighting for her life after ingesting ‘carbon tablets’.
How can this be? Who is addressing these issues? Why don’t anyone see how hurtful their words and actions can be? The questions overpower me like a mudslide on a slippery slope.
One word, DEPRESSION! A disease that is spreading like the amoeba and encapsulating all in its path! Something NEEDS to be done and It must be done really fast…Hear the cries of your fellow mankind. WORDS and actions of rejection can cut deeper with lasting hurts that scream “DIE even by your own hands DIE!” And the rippled sounds amplify in the mind of those too human to be anything else. Is there a switch to turn off the free fall in that dark hole? Is there a life line that someone can hold… the world can be so cold. Can’t someone turn off this switch or fix the shortage and numb the numbness of a crude world designed by some to cause hurt to seem important?
I understand that there is a conference slated for September 2. I pray that it does not turn out to be just a talk-shop of intellectual quotes and no real solutions. Too many young people are opting out because of a sense of hopelessness.
Mind in a whirlwind don’t know where to fit in…Friend, foe, family, kin… STOP THE tailspin… too many are dyeing!
Trapped, kerfuffle in the twist of the mist… bombarded! How did one get into this? Right atop the self execution list…No help in sight, nowhere to turn…In a world of people let alone he/she burns…Soul searching flames extinguished, nine day wonders diminished.
Laced with daggers tongues lash out, whispering spears from friends of doubt…intentions to destroy and the boy/girl becomes a toy of their Joy.
