A 16 year old boy was among five alleged carjackers, who were accused of stealing a number of cars. They made their first appearance at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court yesterday to answer to the charge of robbery under-arms.
The accused were Christopher Nicholson, 18, a labourer, of Tucville Squatting Area; Daniel Boutrin, 16, of Lot 157 Guyhoc Park; Renaldo McKenzie,35, of Lot 7 C Tucville and Mario Rodrigues, 17, a gold smith of lot 1 A Guyhoc Park along with Rosanna Gittens, 35, a mother of four.
They were charged with robbing Dwayne Peters of one motor car PTT 243 valued $1 M, one HTC Cellular phone valued $28,000 and $10,000 cash, while they were armed with a knife in North Ruimveldt.
The vehicle is said to be the property of Roy Aaron.
Further, it was alleged that they stole one motor car HC 786 from Hazel Edwards valued $800,000 property of Genevieve Williams. They also made off with one cellular phone valued $5,000, two drivers’ licenses valued $4,000 among other items all totalling $807,000.
The final charge against them stated that on August 25, at Main Street, Georgetown, they set fire to motorcar PJJ 2432, property of Aaron’s Taxi Service.
Police Prosecutor Corporal Deniro Jones opposed to bail, citing the seriousness and gravity of the charges.
Jones told the court that the defendants are part of an established gang. He stated that it was a usual thing that they would use Gittens to hire the cars to go to a pre-arranged area, where the men would surprise the drivers and hijack the vehicles.
Prosecutor Jones stated that the police, acting on information, went to the location where the carjackers were. However, Jones said that it was the officers who were surprised because when the accused learnt that the police were near, they set fire to one of the vehicles.
Moreover, Jones mentioned that they were all arrested and taken to the police station where further investigations were carried out. He said that sufficient evidence was available to charge the defendants.
He noted that more charges are likely to be laid against the defendants. They were all remanded to prison and will make their next court appearance on September 18.
