After one week of rest where they were probably reviewing their strategies, the nation’s top chess players will return to the National Resource Centre, Woolford Avenue, to resume the intense battle for top honours when the penultimate day of the Linden Forbes Sampson Burnham Memorial Chess Tournament gets underway this morning at that venue.
At the moment, Roberto Neto, has taken charge and leads the pack but by a mere ½ point.
He will have to be wary of former National Junior Champion, Anthony Drayton and Glenford Corlette, the two players that are just ½ of a point shy of his score.
Anyone viewing the first two days of the tournament, and with an inkling of the mercurial nature of the sport, will know that Neto cannot afford to be complacent.
He has had great fortunes in the inaugural and second day and to date has accumulated a flawless 3 points from as many games.
While Corlette is relatively new to the podium positions, the same cannot be said of Drayton who had proven his worth after dethroning Taffin Khan of his junior title a few years ago.
A very dangerous player, Drayton has demonstrated in the past that he has the verve for the big occasion and the final two days will certainly see him lifting his game a notch. Two other players, Alexander Duncan and veteran player, Errol Tiwari are also lurking in the shadows on 2 points apiece and the latter player’s experience cannot be taken for granted; he ruled the roost during the late 70s/early 80s and is as experienced as they come.
Former Junior and Senior National Champion, Taffin Khan has not been on top of his game but has accumulated 2 points after winning one but drawing two of his games, one against Drayton.
He still has to face Tiwari and Neto either this morning or tomorrow and will be required to dig deep if he is to be in serious contention for top honours.
Glenford Corlette is also positioned on 2 points and can also throw a monkey’s wrench in Neto’s aspirations, especially if he scores a windfall of games in today’s sessions.
Dr. Maria Thomas is usually very competitive but her absence for the first round might have affected her rhythm and she went on to drop her second round game to Drayton.
She finished the second day with a victory over Alex Joseph but will be required to up her game a few notches if she is to be a serious contender for the top spot.
The players are cognizant that this is a rated tournament and that the top 8 players will qualify for the national championships later this year.
As such, they will all endeavor to raise their standards and a tense day of chess is envisaged.
