A day after his wife’s funeral, police handcuffed Deochand Sookchand and led him into a city court, where he was accused of murdering his 56-year-old spouse—shot in the head at the couple’s Number 45 Village, Corentyne home.
Sookchand, a Good Hope Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC), employee, was then remanded by Magistrate Ann McLennan after his appearance in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
It is alleged that on August 20, at Number 45 Village, Corentyne, Berbice, the 51-year-old Sookchand murdered his reputed wife, Pamela Kendall.
The unrepresented accused will be making his next court appearance on September 14, at the Whim Magistrate’s Court, Berbice.
Initial reports had indicated that Mrs. Kendall, a cash crop farmer, was shot in the face by a gunman who had forced his way into the couple’s home during a power outage.
Sookchand was reportedly in the bathroom when the ‘gunman’ entered via the back door, shot his wife in the face, ran up an inner stairway, then fled empty handed with an ‘accomplice.’
Pamela Kendall managed to run to her brother’s yard, where she collapsed. She was pronounced dead on arrival at the Skeldon Public Hospital.
Residents had blocked a roadway and burned tyres while expressing outrage at the deadly ‘home invasion’ and other violent crimes in the community.
But a few days later, police arrested Sookchand after reportedly finding forensic and other evidence that implicated him to his spouse’s murder.
Pamela Kendall was laid to rest on Thursday.
