After waiting for one week to find out how their loved one met his demise, the relatives of Winston Grant 38, a labourer of Main Street, Cumberland, East Canje Berbice were not given any answers since the post mortem conducted on his body proved inconclusive.
Grant was rushed to the New Amsterdam hospital on the evening of Friday 21st after he was discovered lying motionless in his cell. He was pronounced dead on arrival.
Grant, who is said to be suffering from some mental problems, had earlier appeared before Magistrate Mauricia Mittleholzer in the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court on a charge of common assault. He allegedly committed the act on an underaged female relative. The child managed to escape and raised an alarm. The man was subsequently arrested, charged and placed before the court.
He was placed on $10,000 bail. Unable to post the bail he was sent to the penitentiary.
According to reports, the man who was misbehaving since he was in the Magistrate’s Court continued to misbehave, banging his head, hitting the walls and became involved in fist fights with other prisoners. He was subsequently put into another cell, but continued to misbehave.
Prison officials made regular checks on the enraged man. After some time it appeared that Grant was not moving.
He was taken out, checked and rushed to the New Amsterdam Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Body parts have been taken for further examination in order to determine the cause of death.
