It was billed as a battle of epic proportions and so it was when Sophia and West Front Road ‘Gold is Money’ clashed in the final game on Thursday night in the inaugural GT Beer Futsal Tournament, at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, Homestretch Avenue.
Rated amongst the two best exponents in the Futsal version of the sport, the two teams battled to an enthralling 5-5 tie to share the points, but more importantly remain unbeaten. Michael Oie sent the West Ruimveldt-based side ahead after two minutes after intercepting a pass to fire past the goalkeeper.
Sophia took little time in responding when former goalkeeper Shemroy Arthur scored with an explosive free kick in the fourth minute, before returning to duplicate the feat two minutes later which gave them a 2-1 lead.
However, just as Arthur had done, Oie returned instantly to level the proceedings after finding himself unmarked following a parry by the goalkeeper from a stinging Randolph Wagner shot, poking in from close range.
However, Sophia regained the ascendancy courtesy of an own goal which occurred when a powerful shot from Omallo Williams deflected off a defender and wrong-footed the surprised goalkeeper. That goal came in the ninth minute of play.
By this time the contest resembled a prize fight as the two teams seemed to stand toe to toe and Wagner joined the slugfest one minute later when he delivered a ferocious right-footer, giving the opposing keeper no chance to save. The break came with the scoreline at 3-3.
Just one minute after the resumption Williams dribbled past one defender, before he let loose a right foot screamer for a 4-3 lead. Sheik Kamal’s 19th minute effort appeared to have cemented the deal for Sophia, but West Front Road had other ideas.
Michael Pedro started the fight back when he netted in the 23rd minute after an initial shot crashed on to the crossbar and into his path and he headed in. With time running out, Oie’s cracking shot that penetrated both defenders and goalkeeper ensured that the points were shared. It came in the 27th minute of play.
In the night’s opener, North Ruimveldt repelled a stiff challenge from Beterverwagting (BV) to prevail 5-3. The experienced Gerald Grittens booted in a brace in the 19th and 27th minute, while Orin Massiah, Joshua Browne and Linris Carrington netted in the eight, 16th and 21st minute respectively.
For BV, Delroy Deen continued to carry the team’s weight on his shoulders, lashing in a treble in the third, 12th and 25th minutes. West Demerara’s Showstoppers made light work of a lackluster Broad Street, beating them 5-2.
Anthony Sancho led the way with a double in the 10th and 21st minute, while Dexroy Adams, Marvin Josiah and Damian Williams assisted with goals in the eight, 11th and 19th minutes respectively. Leon Richardson was the lone marksman for Broad Street, scoring in the 13th and 25th minutes.
Albouystown then squeezed past neighbours Alexander Village 2-1 with Roy Cassou netting in the sixth and 29th minutes, while Delon Williams had tied the contest with his goal in the 22nd minute.
The winning team will take home $500,000 and the championship trophy, while the second, third and fourth place finishers receive$250,000, $125,000 and $75,000. Apart from GT Beer, the other sponsors of the event include the National Milling Company (NAMILCO) of Guyana and Trophy Stall of Bourda Market and Bourda Street. Action in the competition resumes tomorrow evening at the same venue.
