More than 40 boxers are expected to enter the ring this afternoon when the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) stages the 3rd edition of the DDL Pepsi/Gatorade Under-16 boxing championships at the Andrew Lewis Boxing Gym (ALBG), Independence Boulevard, starting at 13:00hrs.
Contrary to the first two editions that were tabbed under the name of the sponsors, today’s edition has been christened the ‘Michael Parris U-16 Boxing Championship in honour of Guyana’s lone medalist at the Olympics Games.
Boxers from the top gyms will battle for the championship trophy including those from the Forgotten Youth Foundation (FYF), Harpy Eagles Boxing gym (HEBG), Young Achievers (YA), Andrew Lewis Boxing Gym (ALBG), the recently commissioned Ann’s Grove Boxing Gym and the Linden based Carryl Boxing Gym (CBG).
The New Opportunity Corps will also field a team at the championships and sources at that institution are very upbeat that pugilists of the Essequibo based institution will do well in the tournament. Over the years boxers in this department have entertained those that attended the venue and much action is expected in today’s encounter.
Further, the aim of this tournament is to create a platform for young boxers, just inaugurated into the sport, to enhance their potential among other pugilists of similar standard.
Administrators of the GBA have reasoned that such outings would be the perfect catalyst to the boxers’ introduction to, and consequently advancement in the sport.
Already, these administrators are boasting that the ploy has served its purpose and a host of boxers who would have gone this route now boxing among the elite class.
Further, in keeping with an agenda to recognize past stalwarts of the sport, the tournament honours Guyana’s only Olympic medalist, Michael Parris.
“This is but a small token in recognition of the valuable contributions of our boxing stalwarts,” pronounced President of the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) Steve Ninvalle earlier in the week at the tournament’s launching.
The GBA boss said that the aim of the initiative is to create a wider awareness of the contributions of past pugilists while spiking the ambitions of contemporary boxers to emulate or even surpass those achievements.
The weigh in will commence at the tournament venue at 10:00hrs and the first punch will be thrown at 13:00hrs.
