Suspected terror gang member Warren McKenzie had his first date with a court of law yesterday. The young man lay helplessly on a stretcher and had to be lifted up the court stairs by members of the Guyana Police Force before he could have faced the presiding Magistrate.
The charges against McKenzie stemmed from the brutal home invasion and robbery perpetrated against Land Court Judge, Nicole Pierre and her husband Mohamed Chand.
Pierre sustained a broken jaw and other injuries, while her husband received severe injuries, which caused him to lose an eye.
The first charge alleged that on July 9, at Montrose, East Coast Demerara (ECD), McKenzie, 22, of Lot 18 Brutus Street Agricola, being in the company of others and armed with a handgun, robbed Mohamed Chand of five wrist watches, a Samsung Galaxy S5 phone, US $8,000, a wedding ring, four Oakley sunglasses and one brown leather wallet.
The second charge alleged that the intruders robbed Pierre at gunpoint. He (McKenzie) relieved her of a quantity of gold rings and diamond jewellery, a clump of gold, a quantity of gem stones among other items, all totalling $1M.
In addition, McKenzie was charged with discharging a loaded firearm at Roy Peters, with intent to maim, disable, disfigure or cause him grievous bodily harm.
Warren was not required to plead to the indictable charges after they were read to him by Magistrate Ann McLennan.
He was subsequently remanded to prison and will be making his next court appearance on September 8, at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court. McKenzie’s co-accused, Damien Millington, Nicholas Narine and Anthony David will also be appearing in court on that day.
The same charges were instituted against the three other men, who were charged on July 21. They were also remanded.
According to court facts, McKenzie was shot after police raided a house in Craig. Several men were inside the house that came under heavy gunfire from the police.
As a result, wanted man Rolston Morrison, also known as ‘Saddam’, was killed. During the raid, lawmen found a gun in the house that matched the weapon used in the robbery, based on ballistic tests.
McKenzie, who had several bandages to his abdomen, could be seen fiddling with a bottle of water as the charges were read to him.
He calmly informed the court that he’s unable to do daily routines for himself and has to depend on assistance from his mother.
The woman sat calmly on a metal chair outside the courthouse with her head tilted downwards.
