An 11-month-old boy was left in pain after a 2 cm-long needle was left in his buttocks after a visit to the Fort Wellington Hospital in Region Five earlier this month.
The baby, Ethan Garnett had the instrument left inside him on August 8, last, and according to his father, Carlos, it seems as if no one in the public health sector is willing to remove the instrument.
The older Garnett and his relatives are worried that the needle which was left in his son, can lead to severe injury in the future if it is not removed.
Garnett of Lot 7 Number 23 Village, West Coast Berbice, said that early last month his mother-in-law and sister took the infant to the hospital after he developed a fever.
The father explained that after the child was seen by a doctor at the health institution, a nurse was instructed to administer an injection to the child.
“My mother-in-law said when the nurse pulled out the syringe, there was no needle in it, and she asked the nurse what had happened and the nurse tell her that the needle fell on the ground… so my sister tell her to find it,” Garnett recounted.
He said that he was further informed that after some hesitation, the nurse called out for the doctor who then referred the infant to the New Amsterdam Hospital to have an X-ray done.
“He was admitted at that hospital for a night after the X-ray revealed that the needle was inside his buttocks, and then he was transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC),” the father explained.
He stated that another X-ray was done at the GPHC and he was informed to take the child home and return two days later.
“I did not go back to that hospital; I went to a private hospital instead, because it was a lot of waiting.”
Kaieteur News was told that at the private hospital, Garnett was informed that if the needle is removed, it can result in further injury.
“The doctor said that once the needle is not affecting the child then we should leave it, but my child is not a car or anything to leave a metal in him. He is human,” Garnett said.
The angry father is questioning why his son has to pay for someone else’s mistake.
“These nurses should be trained more because my son went there to be treated for a fever and came home with a needle inside him,” the man said.
