A teenage push cart operator was yesterday slapped with five armed robbery charges after he was accused of robbing several occupants of a motor vehicle that sustained a punctured tyre at West Ruimveldt Housing Scheme on Friday last.
Alferno Archer, 17, was arraigned at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts yesterday and denied the allegations when he appeared before City Magistrate Ann Mc Lennan.
The allegations are that Archer robbed five persons while brandishing a gun. He allegedly relieved them of cell phones, documents and cash, among other items, valued at over $100,000.
Archer, who told the court he operates a push cart near Stabroek Market, was remanded to prison until September 3.
Police Corporal Deniro Jones informed the court that a bag and phone were recovered on the defendant’s possession. Jones said that the defendant has no pending or previous matters before the court.
Jones told the court that on the day in question, the virtual complainants’ vehicle had a punctured tyre and they stopped to fix it.
As they were doing so, the defendant, who was armed with a gun, along with others, approached the vehicle and demanded that the occupants hand over their valuables.
The defendant told the court that the alleged stolen articles were not recovered on him. He claimed, “the only thing I had on me is my phone and $8,000.”
Further, he denied knowing the virtual complainants. “This is me first time seeing these people,” he exclaimed.
