– Court hears men posed as cops
Deon Giddings, one of four men said to be part of a gang that launched an attack on a mining camp last Saturday, was on Monday jailed for 18 months, at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts after he pleaded guilty to the charge of armed robbery.
Giddings, 34, of Victoria, East Coast Demerara, Dunston Fraser, 27, of Ann’s Grove, ECD, Franklyn Adolph, 27, and Fabian Mars, 25 years, of North Ruimveldt, Georgetown stood quietly in the prisoners’ dock as the charge was read to them by City Magistrate Ann Mc Lennan.
Particulars of the charge stated that on August 22, at Oku Backdam, Cuyuni River, while armed with a gun, they robbed Reginaldo Marinho of a licenced firearm valued $210,000 and two ounces of raw gold valued $490,000 – total value of $700,000.
The accused were all unrepresented.
Giddings’ co-accused pleaded not guilty and were remanded to prison until September 2. They will make their next court appearance at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court.
In mitigation, Giddings pleaded with the Magistrate to exercise leniency when handing down her decision. He said he pleaded guilty because he did not want to waste the court’s time. He added, “I ain’t got no family here. I ain’t got nobody watching mah back.”
Police Corporal Deniro Jones presented the prosecution’s case. In relating the facts, Jones told the court that the virtual complainant (VC) is a licenced firearm holder and a dredge owner.
Jones related that on August 17, around 15:00hrs, the men went into the VC’s camp and identified themselves as police officers from the Bartica Police Station. He added that Giddings was standing while the other men relieved the VC of his firearm and gold before making good their escape.
Meanwhile, also on Monday, Dunston Fraser was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment after pleading guilty to charges of possession of illegal firearm and ammunition and possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.
In addition to the prison term he was ordered to pay a fine of $198,000 – three times the street value of the drug.
In relation to the unlawful possession of firearm and ammunition charges he was sentenced to one year imprisonment on each charge. He was also fined a total of $10,000. The sentences will run concurrently.
These charges were instituted against Fraser, as a result of the robbery that was carried out on Reginaldo Marinho.
The convict was captured on Saturday last, after police found him hiding out at Tamakay Backdam. Searches were carried out on his hammock and person and the illegal gun, ammo and narcotic were found.
As a result, he was arrested, cautioned and taken to the Bartica Police Station, where the charges were laid.
