-Weavers also win
Not even the temporary threat of a power cut managed to dampen a night of exciting matchups when the inaugural GT Beer / Petra Organisation Futsal Competition continued on Monday evening at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
West Back Road, Festival City and Sparta Boss continued their successful run,
while Kitty Weavers secured their first win to join the other three registering victories on the night.
In the night’s opener, Kitty Weavers defeated Queen Street of Tiger Bay 5-4 in their group-A matchup to keep their chances of advancing to the next stage alive.
Nigel Denny started the pursuit for victory when he netted the first of two goals in the opening minute of play, but his effort was cancelled out two minutes later when Keoma Gravesande scored to make it 1-1.
However, Denny returned in the seventh minute to restore Weavers one-goal advantage, but once again the Tiger Bay-based team responded this time through Darren Harris, who fired in his first of a brace in the ninth minute.
Sherwin Vincent beat the opposing goalkeeper in the 11th minute to give Weavers a slim 3-2 lead, before Travis Martin’s 13th minute effort put them ahead 4-2 at the break.
Harris answered one minute after the break as they trailed 3-4 and when James Meredith scored in the 18th minute for Queen Street to tie the game at 4-4 it became even more interesting.
However, Vincent as he does so often got the go-ahead goal in the 24th minute and perhaps revived his team chances of advancing further.
In the game that followed, West Back Road produced another steely performance to edge Bent Street 5-4 in a clash of the unbeaten group-D sides.
O’kenie Fraser gave Bent Street the lead after two minutes with a placed shot down the centre of the goal following a three-on-one situation with the keeper.
West Back Road response came two minutes later through Eron Hayde, who fired in from the right side of the field.
Fraser reclaimed the ascendancy for Bent Street when he unleashed from close range in the fifth minute, before Odel Young’s effort ensured that the teams went to the interval deadlocked at 2-2.
Jamal Haynes then gave West Back Road the lead three minutes into the second period, hammering a powerful strike into the roof of the net after the ball was deflected into his path by the goalkeeper.
The enthralling encounter see-sawed and an own goal by West Back Road could have easily ruined their night, but they refused to buckle under the relentless assault until Haynes restored West Back Road lead in the 25th minute, sliding in his effort into the goal for a 4-3 scoreline.
It became 5-3 two minutes later as Teon Caesar hit a cracking shot into the back of the net after collecting a pass from the right side, before Bent Street pulled one back in the 29th minute through Frank Crandon.
Festival City then inflicted an 8-4 thrashing on Agricola in their group-A shoot-out of unbeaten teams.
Solomon Austin gave Festival City the ideal start when he collected a pass from Dwayne Lawrence and coolly rolled the ball over the line with the goalkeeper stranded on the floor after just one minute.
Daniel Favourite made it 2-0 in the sixth minute, hitting a right-foot screamer into the top right hand corner. Agricola eventually got into stride through a cracking right-footer from their talisman Kacy John in the 10th minute to trail 1-2.
Austin returned in the 14th minute to re-establish Festival City’s two goal cushion after delivering a piledriver into the back of the goal.
Lawrence then made it 4-1 in the 16th minute, before Keith Fletcher joined the party one minute later, easing past the advancing goalkeeper to slot into an empty goal.
Agricola managed to reduce the deficit by one through a Gordon Grant’s 18th minute effort, before Austin 22nd minute strike completed his hat-trick.
Grant and Anthony Rollins netted in the 23rd and 24th minute to cut Agricola’s deficit to 6-4, however Eon Alleyne’s brace in the 25th and 30th minutes piled on more misery.
Sparta Boss, led by a treble from Denis Edwards , who netted in the ninth, 16th and 20th minutes, mauled Globe Yard 7-1 in a group-B fixture.
Edwards’ outstanding performance was supported by solitary strikes from Eusi Phillips, Deon Alfred, Travis Grant and Roberto Osbourne in the seventh, 13th, 14th and 30th minutes respectively.
Keith Caines 12th minute effort was the lone response for Globe Yard.
Action in the group stage is set to resume tomorrow with four more matches, at the same venue.
In the opening fixture, North Ruimveldt tackle Beterverwagting (BV) from 19:00hrs; Showstoppers square off against Broad Street from 19:45hrs; Albouystown go up against Alexander Village from 21:00hrs and West Front Road-Gold is Money and Sophia meet at 21:45hrs.
Among the other sponsors are NaMilCo and Trophy Stall of Bourda Market.
