A patient at the National Psychiatric Hospital was murdered yesterday afternoon during a fight with a fellow inmate.
The dead patient is known as Eda who is said to be in her 30s. She reportedly hails from Blairmont and has been a patient at the mental institution for a number of years. She is said to be mentally retarded.
The perpetrator is Dudwattie Fari who is said to be in her 50s and reportedly hails from the Canje area. She was admitted into the mental institution around June of this year. The incident allegedly occurred in a single room (in seclusion) where the two patients were placed.
According to reports, the two inmates were both patients of the female admission wards (A and B) of the institution. After exhibiting aggressive behaviour recently they were both placed in the single room along with another aggressive patient.
Reports are that around 16:30 hrs there was a misunderstanding between the two patients which ended in a fight. Fari reportedly climbed on the other woman’s head and stamped on her neck.
At the time there was only one nurse working in the ward which housed 22 patients. The patient was pronounced dead by a doctor as the police were called in and commenced their investigation.
The accused remains in isolation in the hospital.
Nurses at the National Psychiatric Hospital continue to express fear for the conditions under which they work. A number of times one nurse is assigned to a ward which houses as many as 31 patients.
The place is very bushy, there are hardly any lights, and sometimes there are no guards working.
As of last evening only one nurse was available to work in each ward.
