He stood for months before City Magistrate Judy Latchman professing his innocence on an attempted robbery charge. Representing himself, Ceon Maynard sat in the prisoner docks and listened to testimonies from the prosecution’s witnesses and shook his head. He always had many questions to ask.
Maynard, of 154 Hadfield Street, Georgetown, was yesterday found guilty on an attempt to commit a felony charge and was sentenced to 18 months’ imprisonment when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
On May 25, at Hadfield Street, Georgetown, armed with a knife, he attempted to rob Yugini Cameron, of a Samsung cellphone valued $60,000.
According to court facts, on the day in question, around 20:30h, Cameron was using her cellular phone on Hadfield Street, when she was approached by Maynard, who was riding a bicycle.
Maynard advanced towards her with a knife and demanded that she hand over her phone. The young woman raised an alarm and, in response, Maynard attempted to ride away. His attempt to escape was foiled by public-spirited citizens who apprehended him and handed him over to the Police. He was charged for the offence.
During the trial, Police Prosecutor Kerry Bostwick called several witnesses to testify. These consisted of the police officers, the victim and civilians.
When Bostwick closed the prosecution’s case last week he submitted that there was sufficient evidence to tie Maynard to the crime. As such, he requested that the court call on Maynard to lead a defence.
The Magistrate subsequently ruled that a Prima Facie case was made out against Maynard and called on him to lead a defence.
In doing so, he was given three options: to give a sworn testimony, an unsworn testimony or to remain silent. Maynard chose to remain silent and called his mother as a witness.
Even though he appeared baffled when cross examining the witnesses, he had questioned the credibility of a statement taken from him by the police. However, the said statement was later admitted into evidence after the Magistrate ruled that she believed it was freely and voluntarily given.
Maynard made his first court appearance before Former Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry back in May and denied the charge. He had been on remand since then.
