Police have detained a well-known robbery suspect as they continue investigations into the murder of 56-year-old Pamela Kendall at 45 Village, Corentyne, last Thursday.
The man in custody is a Number 51 Village, Corentyne resident who was charged last January for armed robbery and possession of arms and ammunition. Police have declined to say whether they have been able to link him to Kendall’s death.
The fact that the killer fled empty-handed has caused investigators to check for motives other than robbery. The slain woman’s reputed husband, NDC employee Deochand Sookchand, confirmed that detectives had even swabbed his hands for possible traces of gunpowder.
Kendall, a cash crop farmer, was shot in the face shortly after she entered the back door of the family’s home, located near the Number 45 Village Public Road. She collapsed in her brother’s yard, located a few houses away, and died at the Skeldon Hospital.
The woman’s reputed husband said that he believed that the gunman and an accomplice had planned to rob them and shot his wife after she screamed.
Sookchand said that the killer struck shortly after the couple had entered their home.
He told Kaieteur News that he was in the bathroom and had just told his wife to close the back door, when he heard her scream. This was followed by a gunshot. He said that he hid in the bathroom and the intruder peered inside, but did not enter.
According to Sookchand, the intruder entered the house, ran up the inner stairs, then left. The attack occurred during a power outage. Sookchand suggested that the killer left without taking anything after failing to find anyone in the premises that he could have forced to hand over anything of value.
Sookchand said that he ran outside to assist his wife, but she had managed to run to her brother’s residence, approximately 100 yards away. She was immediately rushed to the Skeldon Public Hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
The slain woman’s spouse disclosed that investigators found a spent shell and a bullet in the kitchen.
Robert Kendall, the murdered woman’s brother, said his sister had no problems with anyone in the community. Kendall however recounted that the woman and her husband were robbed three times before but nobody being arrested.
