Following a string of commendable performances internationally, local volleyball has been getting a much needed boost recently and has been making moves in the right direction to be recognised as one of the premier sports here.
A release from the Guyana Volleyball Federation (GVF) stated that through its affiliation to the CSV (South American Volleyball Confederation) and under the stewardship of President John Flores, the Body has been benefitting from a number of international engagements and has demonstrated that the sport can help to bring recognition to Guyana on the international scene.
On the heels of a recently concluded South American Beach Volleyball tournament held in Ecuador where Guyana was represented by two teams and managed to pull off an upset victory against a much higher rated Peru team, the local men are now in preparation for the CSV male indoors championship to be held in Maceio, Brazil from September 27-October 5 this year.
In preparation for the upcoming international engagement to be hosted by volleyball giant, Brazil, the national selectors led by long standing senior and junior national coach, Levi Nedd, shortlisted 21 players from Demerara and Berbice who commenced preparations yesterday.
Newly appointed Assistant National Coach Ian Wills will conduct sessions for the Demerara based players, while the Berbice players will go through their paces under the guidance of Nedd.
Nedd expressed pleasure with the recent successes volleyball has been getting at the international level through its men teams and revealed that plans are in place to commence preparations of a female team to compete internationally.
He also pointed out that even though the initial preparation of the male team for the upcoming games will be done separately due to geographical constraints, both groups will be undergoing similar training because he and Wills are being guided by the same coaching plan he had drafted.
As a result of this, he expects that when the entire team unites for encampment, all the players would be at the same level of preparation.
The complete squad is as follows:
Wendell Austin, Corwyn Richards, Trevlon Mc Rae, Quacy Matheson, Jamal Duncan, Shemroy Ross, Creston Rodney, Ian Bagott, Jason Seelochan, Beepaul Bandoo, Akeem Bowling, Adriel Moore, Errol Fingal, Luen David, Devendra Latchman, Vance Harding, Khemraj Singh, Xavier Lambert, Joshua Jagmohan and Samuel Fraser.
Meanwhile, Flores used this opportunity to express his satisfaction with the direction in which volleyball has been going recently and pledged his commitment to continue to utilise the relationship that the local Federation has with the CSV to further enhance the development of the sport locally.
Flores informed that in keeping with his drive to introduce and develop the game in a more inclusive framework, his federation recently donated a quantity volleyballs and a net to the Plaisance Sport Club.
The next village expected to benefit from this drive is Buxton.
At the presentation, Flores pledged his commitment to assist them with the introduction and development of the sport within the club and emphasised the importance of exposing children to the sport.
The Federation also announces that preparation is underway to host a Volleyball Cooperation Programme sponsored by the FIVB (Federation of International Volleyball).
The course will be facilliated by Julio Morales, who is a FIVB International Coach out of the USA and it will be held from September 5-9, at the National Gymnasium and is aimed at introducing and developing young players who are interested in the game.
Interested persons can contact Nicholas Fraser, Secretary of the GVF on telephone number 698-4328 to register.
Flores himself is scheduled to attend the South American Congress next week in Peru, where he intends to continue strengthening the already fruitful relationship that GVF has developed with the South American body which according to him has offered to bring the local federation up to a Level Two status.
