The organizers and participants of the second Reunion of Ex-members of the Guyana National Service share a deep conviction that “National Service is still very relevant today.”
This is a major highlight that will be in focus as the second reunion of Ex-members of the Guyana National Service (GNS) unfolds over the next few days in Guyana.
As of Friday the former members of the defunct para-military organization began arriving in Guyana for the much anticipated nine days event which culminates on August 30.
Most of the events will take place at the Carifesta Sports Complex on Carifesta Avenue, Thomas Lands formerly the GNS Sports Complex.
According to the organizers, Ex-GNS members and their families from North America, the Caribbean and all over Guyana form the core of participants.
The reunion activities commenced with a religious service yesterday, Sunday August 23nd at the Carifesta Sports Complex.
The highlight of the week of activities will be a symposium slated for Wednesday August 26th from 17:00 hours at the Carifesta Sports Complex, under the theme “Youth development strategies; problems and solutions, then and now”.
President David Granger is scheduled to deliver the feature address. Other scheduled items on the programme include trips and tours to places of interest: Berbice – New Amsterdam, Skeldon and Corriverton; Essequibo – New Opportunity Corps at Onderneeming, Anna Regina, Kaeiteur Falls and Baganara Resort.
The grand finale will be a Gala Dinner and Dance at the Impeccable Banquet Hall, Brickdam, Georgetown on Friday August 28th 2015.
The organizers of this year’s event, along with all the participants, are joined by a deep conviction that National Service is relevant today. They shared a unique experience of the geography and cultures of Guyana, lifting a veil on the diversity, beauty and vast opportunities of this nation.
For so many of the members, the National Service experience was a transformative one that changed their lives for the better in terms of their education, skill set, civic values, physical and mental agility and arguably a winning attitude that “we can do it in all our pursuits”.
The second reunion of Ex-GNS Members is a strong statement to Guyana and the world that the National Service experience is one that is treasured as a unifying force that empowered many and has the potential to empower Guyana’s youth.
Other programme highlights include a wreath laying ceremony according to the Association of Ex GNS Members (Guyana) & Team Reunion (North America).
Robert Cummings is the President of the Association of Ex GNS members while the Public Relations Officer is Courtney Parris who represents Team Reunion (North America).
