The August Vacation Swimming Programme concluded yesterday morning with the closing ceremony at the National Aquatic Centre and Administrative Officer of the National Sports Commission (NSC) Gervy C. Harry, who give the welcome and Introduction, described the six-week event as a success.
The ceremony got started with the Panwave Steel Orchestra playing the National Anthem before Administrative Assistant of the Colgrain Pool, Desiree Cummings provided a review of this year’s programme that catered for 160 students.
Some of the Junior participants and social Worker Colleen Fraser, who is also a parent of one of the students, collaborated to sing ‘Heal the World’ before participant Ess Skeete, recited a dramatic poem and a group of Senior Students give their rendition of Whitney Houston’s ‘Greatest Love of all’.
President of the Guyana Amateur Swimming Association Ivan Persaud told the gathering which including participants, officials, parents and the Media that most of the students ‘did not have any idea’ about swimming six weeks ago.
He added that the Coaches and parents play an important role in the formative development of their children’s swimming careers by the coaches providing the technical skill and the parents nourishing their young ones by teaching them what to eat.
He informed that had Guyana participated in more relays they would have done much better than their fifth place in the 2015 Goodwill Games in Trinidad, since a team get 18 points for a relay victory.
“The fact one of the big clubs pulled out of the games, affected Guyana badly in their hunt for Medals. Aleka Persaud, who was present yesterday, was the outstanding Guyanese at the meet,” added the GASA head.
Director of Sports Christopher Jones began his presentation by asking the students if they believed they were a ‘big deal’ and told those present that the Government of Guyana will continue with this programme which was organised by the Ministry of Education, Department of Culture, Youth and Sports and the NSC.
Jones urged the parents to find out which clubs use the pool and encouraged them to join their children in those clubs. He reminded them that the Aquatic Centre is open to the public on Thursdays and Sundays and anyone under 16 could use the pool for free.
Minister within the Ministry of Education, department of Culture, Youth & Sports Nicolette Henry said Education is more than academics.
The Minister told the gathering that in order to reach their full potential they need to inculcate sports, the Arts and Culture and reminded that the skills that Sports provides included life skills like leadership among others.
Minister Henry charged the youngsters to take this opportunity to go beyond this programme and to be committed to their own development.
“Live your dreams and be all that you want to be,” the politician concluded.
There was a swimming demonstration by some of the participants to show what they had learned before they were presented with their Certificates by the Minister.
Ms Odessa De Barros, the Chairperson of the Parent Committee also spoke during the Ceremony.
