The Selection Committee of the Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) met and ratified the representative Guyana team to participate in the Caribbean Championships, scheduled for September 2-7, 2015 in the Dominican Republic.
“Despite the late receipt of the prospectus for notification of the Championships, the association is embarking on sending a representative team to the prestigious Championships,” GTTA said in a press release yesterday.
The Championship initially scheduled to be held in Barbados, was postponed on two occasions due to Barbados’ inability to host the Championships; the Dominican Republic has indicated its willingness to host the Championships.
The team was selected after round-robin playoff/trials were held on August 13-14 among the players in the respective categories and after a further assessment was done in the Boys 13 years and Under category on August 16 at the National Gymnasium.
The trials truly emphasized the depth in the 13 years and Under boys category where competition and level of play displayed between the players were very high. The boys 11
years and Under category was also exciting to watch with Kayson Ninvalle, Isaiah Layne, Colin Wong and Kristian Sahadeo showing great talent and prospects.
Players selected to represent Guyana are as follows:
Boys 11 years and Under: Kaysan Ninvalle, Isiah Layne, Colin Wong, Kristian Sahadeo, and standby Alexander de Abreu.
Girls 11 years and Under: Thuraia Thomas would be the lone representative in the 11 years and Under Girls where she would play the girl singles, but would join the girls 13 years and Under team for the team events .
“The Committee felt that it would be shrewd to further develop the talents of new entrants Xavia Holder, Shevana Roberts and Kassia Liverpool before exposing them to international competition despite their obvious talent,” the release observed.
Boys 13 years and Under: Jamal Nicholas, Terrence Rausche, Yeudister Persaud, Tyriq Saunders, and standbys; (1) Brandon Jaikarran and (2) Navendra Persaud form a formidable line.
Girls 13 years and Under: 2013 Caribbean 11 and Under Girls Team Champion, Selenas
Jackman, Neveah Clarkston 2013 Caribbean 11 and Under Girls Singles Champion, the talented Abigail Martin and debutant Thuraia Thomas would form the 13 Years and under Girls team.
The selection committee of the GTTA also named provisional list of coaches who would perform the role of coaching the players; Linden Johnson who would double as Manager/Coach along with Colin France and Idi Lewis. Dawn Layne was named Chaperone.
“The team is training twice daily under a structured programme at the National Gymnasium. The Pre Cadet Championships engages players within the ages of 13 years and Under, 11 Years and Under and has been the incubator for the development of regional table tennis,” the GTTA continued.
Guyana has been very competitive at these Championships over the years winning several medals. The team’s participation is heavily dependent on Government and corporate support with an estimated budget of approximately 3.9 million dollars.
