EU Ambassador pays farewell visit to President Granger
Time to say goodbye! EU Ambassador, Robert Kopecký, presents a token as a parting gift to President David Granger.
Outgoing Head of the European Union Delegation to Guyana, Ambassador Robert Kopecký, says he is very optimistic about the future development of Guyana. The Ambassador expressed the sentiments yesterday following a farewell visit to President David Granger, at the Ministry of the Presidency.
“I was pleased to tell him (President Granger) that I see a lot of potential for further development nationally and for closer cooperation with the neighbours of Guyana,” Kopecký said.
The Ambassador added that Guyana’s geographical location can be seen as a plus for both the Caribbean and the European Union.
This, he noted in a statement from the Ministry, is especially beneficial, as Guyana is a neighbour of Suriname, an overseas territory of Holland. It creates a potential link between CARICOM and countries within the European Union.
“I’m glad that the two Presidents (Guyana and Suriname) met last week and they are talking about cooperation, because you can create new clouds of bigger bodies of cooperation, both on the continent and the Caribbean,” he added.
Further, Ambassador Kopecký said the new administration’s plans to move towards green energy should be applauded. He noted that Guyana has significant potential for the development of sustainable energy.
Ambassador Kopecký also used the occasion to present President Granger with a token as a parting gift.
The outgoing envoy served as the resident Ambassador to Guyana as well as the non-resident Ambassador to Suriname, Trinidad & Tobago and the Dutch Overseas Countries and Territories, for the past four years. Along with the embassies from the US, Canada and the UK, the ambassador had been vocal in urging for Local Government Elections and other reforms.
