The police continue to show that they are not only about law enforcement but care about creating alternative avenues for youths stay and away from illicit activities.
Recently, ranks of B Division of the Guyana Police Force, led by acting Commander, Senior Superintendent Errol Watts, visited the squatting community of Angoy’s Avenue, on the outskirts of New Amsterdam to interact with residents and distribute some sports gear.
Accompanying the Acting Commander was Community Relations Officer of B Division Assistant Superintendent Alistair Roberts, Officer in Charge of No.1 sub division Assistant Superintendent Marlon Taylor, Station Sergeant of the Central Police Station, Marlon O’Donaghue among a number of other ranks.
The visit and handing over ceremony was made possible through the collaborative effort of Assistant Superintendent Roberts and Pastor Dennis Charles of the Hope Pentecostal International Church situated at Mai Mai and church Street Angoy’s avenue.
Over the years the police have been interacting with the troubled Angoy’s Avenue community and have made numerous interventions in their effort to foster a better relationship.
During the latest visit the police presented two prefab goals and nets along with a football to Pastor Charles to be used among members of the community. Assistant Superintendent Roberts stated that the equipment was acquired from The Ministry of National Security as part of a larger package in their community enhancement programme. He said that this is part of the police initiative to help to keep youths meaningfully occupied and away from illicit activities and out of trouble. He said, “We want to have the youths utilize their energies in a useful way. We don’t want them to be idle and getting into trouble.”
Acting Commander, Senior Superintendent Errol Watts stated that the police force is not only about solving crimes, executing charges and prosecuting cases but about helping people help themselves to do good thing and stay out of trouble. He stated that the force is extremely pleased to be in a position to hand over the set of equipment to the community. Watts urged residents not to be afraid of the police, because the police are their friends.
The Acting Commander stated that the youths are our future and the Police force will endeavor in every way possible to assist them in their development, in whatever career they choose, as long as it is beneficial to the society.
He said that jail is not a place for young people; this is why the police is going the extra mile to make sure that they have opportunities to be beneficially occupied. The initiative is part of the Cops and Faith Outreach [CFO].
Pastor Charles in thanking the police expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the officers for the initiative, especially in choosing that particular community. He gave his commitment in making sure that the equipment is used for the betterment of the community.
The Ministry has also given the police a number of other sports gear including Table Tennis equipment and dominoes. The police along with a number of other security organizations in Berbice, two years ago had adopted a nearby play ground in the area.
Assistant Superintendent Taylor who recently took command of the No.1 subdivision visited the East Bank Berbice where he met with residents at various villages. (Samuel Whyte)
