Outstanding performances by Aleka Persaud, Onika George and Hannibal Gaskin handed Guyana seven gold medals at the recently concluded Goodwill games in Trinidad and Tobago. The locals also claimed 10 silvers and 12 bronze, a total of 29 medals.
Competing in the girls eight and under category, Persaud overpowered her rivals to capture gold in the 50m freestyle, butterfly, breaststroke and 100m freestyle. She clocked 36.20 seconds in the 50m butterfly thereby erasing her previous mark of 37.40 seconds. Gaskin became the first Guyanese to fall below two minutes at the meet; he won the 200m 15-17 freestyle in a time of 1 minute 58.66 seconds, his previous time was 1 minute 59.29 seconds.
George carted off the 50m backstroke event and took silver in the 50m and 100m freestyle, and 100m backstroke while Persaud placed second in the 100m IM. Leon Seaton took the runner up spot in the 50m and 200m freestyle; Gaskin also claimed silver in the 100m butterfly.
Guyana placed second in the 13-14 boys’ 4x100m, 4x50m and 15-17 boys’ 4x50m freestyle Relay.
Guyana’s bronze medalist were Patrice Mahaica (50m breaststroke), Accalia Khan (50m backstroke), George 200m freestyle, Philip De Nobrega (200m IM and 100m backstroke), Gaskin (100m freestyle) and Omar Adams (200m freestyle).
The Guyanese also placed third in the girls 8 and under 4x50m freestyle, 15-17 4x50m freestyle, 4x100m freestyle and 4x100m IM, and in the boys’ 15-17 4x100m freestyle. Persaud was crowned the 8 and under high point champion.
Aleka Persaud, Leon Seaton (12 and under), and Onika George and Hannibal Gaskin (13 and over) were recipients of awards presented by the Finis equipment agents which is based in Trinidad for being among the most outstanding swimmers in their respective categories.
