Lawmen in the Ancient County remain on high alert as they continue the manhunt for the robbery accused who escaped from the New Amsterdam prison nine days ago.
On August 12, Lennox Patterson teamed up with another robbery accused, Ravindra Samaroo to stage a daring escape from the 88-year-old wooden prison facility at Penitentiary Walk.
Samaroo, of Timmers Dam, Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam, was captured the very next day, but 26-year-old Patterson has successfully avoided the clutches of the police. Samaroo has since been charged with escaping from lawful custody.
The two prisoners at the time of their escape were occupying adjoining cells and acted in concert, knocking out a single 7-feet board from the prison’s wooden walls.
Leaving four companions behind, they reportedly squeezed their way through the hole in the wall, and climbed down bed sheets they had lowered. The men managed to scale the facility’s high zinc fence, which has barbed wire on top.
Officials surmised that they made their way across a poorly illuminated farm located behind the prison.
The police are asking anyone with information that may lead to the arrest of Patterson to contact them on telephone numbers 225- 8196, 225-6411, 333-2191, 333-2151, 911 or the nearest police station.
Speaking to Kaieteur News last evening, Head of ‘B’ Division (ag), Commander Watts indicated that ranks are still on high alert, even though all search attempts have been fruitless thus far.
He added that civilians are uneasy knowing Patterson is on the loose, but the ranks are working assiduously to capture him.
“He is a prisoner of the state and Berbicians are concerned. I don’t know what his motive is, so we are concerned. He can create further mischief,” the Commander said.
Watts said that at the time of his arrest, Patterson was found with a firearm, and he was already slapped with two counts each of Robbery Under Arms charges and Possession of Firearms and Ammunition.
Patterson was remanded after facing charges at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court late last month. The charges were instituted following a brazen robbery at M Ali Supermarket, at Pope and Main Streets, New Amsterdam. He and accomplices reportedly made off with the owner’s firearm, cash and other items totaling $831,000.
