A man who tried to force himself on a woman after gulping down several pints of ‘bush rum’ was brutally hacked to death by the woman’s husband and brother.
The incident occurred last Sunday at a remote North West District village called Nasana, some 80 miles from Matthews Ridge.
A brief police release had stated that the victim, known only as ‘Andrew’, was involved in an altercation with two men, during which he was chopped about his body. He was pronounced dead on arrival at the Port Kaituma Health Centre, North West District. The two suspects were subsequently arrested.
According to reports reaching this newspaper, “Andrew” was drinking in a shop in the community when the woman and her mother entered to make some purchases.
Police were told that the man began making passes at the woman who refused to entertain him.
In his drunken state “Andrew” proceeded to indecently assault the woman, despite the objections of both her and her mother, as well as other patrons in the shop.
The woman’s mother became so incensed that she rushed home and informed her son and son-in-law.
When the two angry men arrived at the shop, they were greeted by an already intoxicated “Andrew” and an argument immediately erupted.
According to the source, it was “Andrew” who threw the first blow with a cutlass, but he was quickly overpowered and subsequently hacked to death.
News of the murder was relayed to the police who travelled to the location and arrested the suspects.
A senior police official said that investigators are in possession of written statements from both suspects, who admitted to carrying out the deed. One of the suspects has reportedly confirmed that he chopped the victim after the man assaulted his sister.
Both suspects were flown to the city yesterday and are expected to appear in court today to answer the capital charge of murder.
Kaieteur News understands that no relative of the dead man has come forward and police are likely to release a photograph of him, in the hope that he is identified.
Recently released statistics revealed a 61 percent increase in disorderly murders during the first seven months of the year.
Ninety-nine people have been murdered so far.
