The squad shortlisted by the Georgetown Dominoes Association (GDA) to participate in the upcoming tournament slated to commence on September 23 in Puerto Rico yesterday paid a courtesy call to Director of Sport Christopher Jones.
The contingent comprising GDA president Faye Joseph, Secretary Barbara Marshall and Public Relations Officer Orin Boston, briefed the Director of their trip to Puerto Rico as well as other upcoming events which include hosting of an international tournament to celebrate Guyana’s 50th Independence Anniversary in 2016 in an effort to move the sport forward.
Jones pledged his support for the team going to Puerto Rico and commended the efforts of the GDA. “It shows that they have the dedication and from all indication they have been very successful in previous tours.” Noting that they are going to meet about 10 other countries in the competition, and of course with the view of inviting those countries for a tournament for our 50th Anniversary in admirable, he added.
Jones pointed out that it will help to promote tourism. “Perhaps some of those countries that they will meet in Puerto Rico may have little knowledge about Guyana, so their trip will boost tourism here and associations like these must be supported for the work that they have been doing,” he said.
GDA head Joseph, told Kaieteur Sport that they are looking forward to keep the Golden Arrow Head aloft in Puerto Rico. She added that the World Council tournament is set for Antigua in 2016 and Guyana will look to continue their dominance on that stage as well.
Joseph expressed gratitude to Jones for his input. “Our aim is to promote the sport and which serves as a unifying factor. We have been touring on a regular basis but have never sought sponsorship from anyone but we need as much assistance for this trip,” she stated.
She explained that their previous trips have help to boost tourism here and they will also use their tour to Puerto Rico to promote the GDA 2016 international tournament. The Guyanese will compete in King, Queen, Three-hand and Pairs in the Spanish speaking country.
