Terence ‘Terry’ Holder has been posthumously inducted into the Caribbean Broadcasting Union (CBU) Hall of Fame.
The recognition took place on Monday, last, at the Grenada National Stadium with the feature address coming from Prime Minister, Dr. Keith Mitchell.
Also inducted was Rose Willock, O.B.E.,
Holder was recognized as instrumental to the birth of the region’s first ever television news exchange, “Caribvision” as well as the regional television magazine, “Caribscope”.
In the recount of his service to Caribbean media, it was highlighted that he was the only person ever to hold both the positions of President and Secretary General of the CBU.
After the reading of Holder’s citation by Jones Madeira, himself a member of the CBU Hall of Fame, Holder’s plaque was received by his daughter, Dawn Holder-Alert and his son, Duane.
In her response to the citation, Holder-Alert said that her father was with the gathering in spirit.
“Terence Ormonde Holder was a genuinely humble man and I’m reminded of the words of
Rabindranath Tagore: “We come nearest to the great when we are great in humility”.”
She said that broadcasting and regional integration were his life, apart from the passion he had for cricket.
“I am not sure that he could have survived with the performance of his beloved West Indies and Guyana teams with his composure intact. Daddy believed in regional integration the way Christians believe in the Second Coming. Regional broadcasting was one of the ways (CaribVision etc.) of realising this objective. Hence his passion for regional broadcasting and the deployment of his administrative skills to make the CBU a success.”
The late broadcaster’s daughter said that when asked in a special feature in Kaieteur News how he would like to be remembered, he humbly replied: “I would like to be remembered as someone who has tried to put community first. I have been in organisations that have helped me to see how to work with people in communities and make a difference in their lives.”
“He certainly achieved that in his fine innings of 73, played with some stylish shots, bat and pad close together, even against some hostile bowling he would’ve faced in his time at the crease. We are proud to call him our father and now this award makes us beam with pride, our only regret is that he is not here to hear his friend Jones P. read that citation. His response would’ve been more personal and filled with humour as only he could’ve done it.”
She said that her father along with his friends – the late Rafiq Khan and Hugh Cholmondeley- must be celebrating this achievement in the great beyond.
Meanwhile according to CBU, Willock’s service to the region, especially in building capacity for emergency broadcasting, was highlighted in the citation read by Editor Emeritus of the Nation Newspaper, Harold Hoyte. It was noted that Willock’s career had been marked by her time as Head of the English Service of Radio Antilles in the aftermath of the devastation by Hurricane Hugo in 1989, as well as her recognition on the Queen’s honours lists in 1986 and 1996 with an MBE and an OBE respectively.
These latest additions to the CBU Hall of Fame bring the total number of awardees to 14.
