Police have arrested two persons in connection with the early morning robbery, which occurred at Number Two Village, West Coast Berbice on Sunday.
The attack took place at the home of West Berbice business couple, Abdool and Neerranie Kadir. Mr. Kadir owns three fishing boats and would usually sell his produce at the Rosignol Market.
The couple was preparing to go to the usual location to sell, when three masked bandits confronted them in their yard.
The 47-year-old fisherman sustained chop wounds to his stomach and head, while his wife was gun-butted, chopped and relieved of her rings as she tried desperately to escape from two of the men, who had cornered her in the bottom flat of the family’s home.
Police had initially arrested five suspects in connection with the crime but none of them, were said to be involved.
However, a source close to the family, has confirmed that two other persons were arrested and have been positively identified as the bandits. Kaieteur News understands that the men are currently in police custody assisting with investigations.
After attacking the couple’s home, the masked men had initially fled into nearby rice fields.
Police ranks, who responded to the crime, reported that they came under gunfire from a group of men along the Number Two Village Public Road. The cops said that they returned fire and arrested a suspect.
Mrs. Kadir, 46, had suffered the brunt of the attack. She had been hospitalized at the Georgetown Public Hospital over the weekend. The fish vendor bore gaping cutlass wounds to her arms and legs along with a broken limb.
She was also struck on the head and had a tooth knocked out when one of the bandits pushed a gun into her mouth. Mrs. Kadir was admitted to the hospital after she underwent a CT scan and X-ray examination. She has since been discharged from the facility.
