In response to reports appearing in sections of the media stating that capital projects in Region Four had been postponed until next year, Chairperson Genevieve Allen has debunked those reports in their entirety and called for full retractions.
This was conveyed during a press briefing at the Regional Democratic Council, Beterverwagting (BV) yesterday.
Accompanying Allen was the Regional Executive Officer (REO) (ag.) Ameena Hinds and Regional Vice Chairman, Earl Lambert. The reports in question appeared in other sections of the media.
The story had named Deolall Rooplall as the REO and had quoted him as saying that the capital works would be postponed until next year and that approval of the 2015 budget was delayed owing to the actions of the previous administration in 2014 (prorogation of Parliament).
Allen pointed out that Rooplall, who had signed the press release the story had been based on, reached the end of his contract since July 7th, 2015. The Regional Chairperson emphasized that his contract hadnot been renewed.
“Hence the statement in the newspaper can be termed as an erroneous one. When a perusal of the estimates of expenditure for the year 2015…Region four is done, you will recognize that a number of projects under capital have been given financial allocations, in the five programmes.”
These programmes, Allen explained, were administration/finance, agriculture, public works, education and health. According to her, the contracts under the programme allocations will be implemented.
“So we want to alleviate the fear that has arisen in the minds of Region Four’s constituents. Furthermore, the budget package was delivered to media officials. Therefore, (the media entities) should have done some detailed investigation before printing such an erroneous statement.” Allen stated, while concluding by calling for the statement to be retracted.
The REO outlined that under capital programmes detailing education, construction on Schools – Golden Grove Secondary for $25M and Peters Hall Primary School for $20M – would commence under a multi-year programme.
“For Health, there would be renovations of the Chest Clinic facility at the Diamond Regional Hospital, including the extension of the delivery room and the extension of Melanie Health Centre. (In addition) there will be an extension of the diabetic foot clinic and we will be constructing a pharmacy at the Clonbrook Health Centre,” Hinds said.
Asked who was responsible for the press release, the REO could not say, only to reiterate that it did not emanate from the Regional office.
