Autamaram Lakeram hands over the cheque for an undisclosed sum to Petra’s Troy Mendonca (left) in the presence of NaMilCo’s Fitzroy McCleod.
National Milling Company (MaMilCo) became the latest member of the corporate community to add its name to the list of sponsors of the inaugural GT Beer / Petra Organisation Futsal Competition which kicks off today with four matches, at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
Yesterday, at the Company’s Head Office, Company representative Autamaram Lakeram handed over a cheque for an undisclosed sum to Director of the Petra Organisation Troy Mendonca in the presence of NaMilCo’s Financial Controller Fitzroy McCleod.
McCleod, who very early declared his passion for the sport, spoke of the role sports play in developing the mental, social and physical skills of people, adding that its importance is well researched and documented.
He said he hoped that the venture will be a success and urged fans to come out and support the tournament to the end.
Mendonca in his remarks thanked the Company for once again assisting in the development of sports, informing that it has been a feature of the Company’s social responsibility policy.
He cited the hosting of the Annual NaMilCo Football Tournament which is organised by Fruta Conquerors FC as ample testimony to the entity’s seriousness in helping to develop sports locally.
He further said that kudos must be given to the company for their continued support of social events nationally, while nothing, “It’s only fair that I ask fans and players to continue support the company. Once again, the Petra Organization thanks you for supporting the event.”
Meanwhile, East Bank Demerara-based Agricola will headline action tonight when they face Kitty Weavers in the second game.
The team’s go-getter Kacy John is once again expected to lead their search for victory, but so too are penalty specilaist Glen Eastman and Gordon Grant.
Kitty Weavers on the other hand is a very strong team and should provide a stern test for Agricola. It is expected that the line-up will include players the calibre of Sherwin Vincent, Wendell St. Hill, Quincy Madramootoo and Terrence ‘Ole Head’ Lewis.
In the first encounter, Albouystown square off against Globe Yard and this should provide an exciting start to the tournament with Marlon Nedd and Roy Cassou anticipated to lead the charge for a win for Albouystow, while the experienced Sherwin Grimes is the main threat for Globe Yard.
The third game will see North Ruimveldt take on West Back Road and even though some may be tempted to believe it is a safe bet to place a wager of the former, the latter should not be taken lightly.
The experienced Gerald Gritten whose performance is usually responsible for the team’s success will have support from Joshua Brown.
West Back Road did have had some upset victories in the past against strong teams and it is this record that gives them an outside chance of springing another upset.
Jamal Haynes and Philip Rowley are the main threat for West Back Road.
The curtains come down with the clash between Sparta Boss and Alexander Village.
The defending national champs had their reputation dented by Agricola, but with such a star-studded lineup that includes Travis Grant, Gregory Richardson and Sheldon Shepherd it is difficult to right them off.
Shem Porter, Jermin Junor, Chavez Hescott and Leon Yaw are perhaps the most experienced unit in the competition, having excelled in this format for a number of years and could be classified as a dangerous side.
Winner of the tournament receives $500,000 and the championship trophy, while the second, third and fourth place finishers takes home $250,000, $125,000 and $75,000 respectively.
Kick off time is 19:00 hrs and price of admission is $500.
