They’ve seen his face and know his name, but the man who was seen on camera battering 77-year-old Danrasie ‘Carmen’ Ganesh to death over two weeks ago continues to keep one step ahead of the detectives who are tracking him.
It is unclear why police have been unable to apprehend the suspect, who is said to have previous break-and-enter arrests, and whose image has been displayed in the media and online. Information reaching Kaieteur News indicates that the killer may be a drug user.
The intruder only made off with a few pieces of jewellery Mrs. Ganesh was wearing at the time and the victim’s pension she had collected the day prior to her murder. In a security camera recording released to the public by Kaieteur News, a man is seen clubbing Mrs. Ganesh on the head shortly after she enters her bottom flat, after saying her morning prayers.
He is then seen kicking and stomping the fallen woman, whose body is partly out of sight. This continues for several minutes, with the attacker occasionally speaking and gesticulating at his victim.
Seemingly unaware or unconcerned about the presence of security cameras, the intruder is seen roaming about the victim’s bottom flat and sifting through papers and repeatedly entering a room.
Based on his actions, family members believe that the man was not there just to rob Mrs. Ganesh, but wanted to ensure that she suffered before he finally ensured she was dead.
Police had detained a Montrose businessman with whom Ganesh and her family had a land dispute a few years ago. But the man was released after detectives failed to link him to the murder.
Prior to this, police had detained a 24-year-old man who they had previously suspected to be the man in the video footage.
He was released after investigators received leads about the new suspect and established that the detained man’s prints didn’t match those taken from the crime scene.
Police have appealed to individuals with information on Mrs. Ganesh’s killer to reach them on telephone numbers 225-6411, 225-8196, 225-2227, 229-2557, 229-2702, 911 or the nearest police station. All information will be treated with strict confidence.
