The Trinidad and Tobago Girls’ U19 squad out of the Fizabad Senior College FC defeated the Little Divas of Guyana 3-0 to claim the honours and cart off the beautiful trophy at stake when the curtains came down on the Fruta Conquerors’ Goodwill tournament at the Tucville Ground last Sunday evening.
However, the contingent from the Twin Island Republic was denied a clean sweep when their men’s team suffered a close 5-4 defeat on penalty kicks in their match against the host team. The final results meant that the two countries finished on an even keel, both claiming one of the prestigious accolades on offer.
Trinidadian, Dennecia Prince, replicated her performance of one night earlier when she netted a brace against a mixed team of local players while Collette Nicolleen Morgan added another goal to her tally after she had also scored in the match on the inaugural night of the championship.
Captain of the Trinidadian (women’s) team, Crystal Preddie, during a pre-tournament press conference had warned her adversaries that her girls had come to play tough football. Those words were certainly not lost on the Little Divas who fought like tigers during the early stages of the match and managed to keep the situation nil all for the most part.
Just when it appeared as though the teams would have gone in at the half on a nil all stalemate, Prince changed the dynamics with a solo from the middle of the field. The Divas’ defence attempted to check her run but the Trinidadian striker swept passed the obstacle and deftly tucked the ball to the right of the advancing opposition goalie. Prince’s goal was a beauty as she weaved her way past the Diva’s flimsy defense and tapped the ball into the opposition’s goal.
Prince returned and stretched the lead for the Trinidadians less than five minutes later with a spirited run that climaxed with a stiff jab that traveled along the ground and settled aback the nets and sealed the Diva’s fate.
The celebrations were instantaneous as the Trinidadians and their supporters erupted into dance and gyration while someone popped the cork of a champagne bottle, cascading on the jubilant Trinidadians.
The men’s game was evenly contested with both teams pulling off all the stops in an excellent display of defense and offence. There were hardly any opportunities to score as both teams kept the ball swirling around centre field for most of the match. There were a few bright moments for the local team none more glaring than a vicious kick off the boot Shamar Barrow which flew tantalizingly close to the opposition’s goal before sliding down the right.
The final whistle moments later meant that the decision rested on the shoulders of the men between the uprights.
Fruta Conquerors’ blunder occurred at the third kick when the Trinidadian goalie sprang to his left and punched the ball to safety. Undeterred, the team from Tucville stuck to the task and netted twice before the visitors erred on their fifth kick which the Conqueror’s goalie managed to intercept. The local custodian repeated his theatrics one more time while his team mates breached the opposition’s goal to triumph and send their supporters into jubilant celebrations.
The occasion was hosted by the Fruta Conquerors FC and coincided with their August holidays programme where dozens of youngsters are currently undergoing training in football and other life improvement skills at the host entity’s Tucville headquarters.
The trophies were donated by corporate Guyana while Bakewell and Sterling Products also assisted with valuable contributions towards the tournament’s success.
