DEAR EDITOR,
I note the PPP has decided to take up the 32 seats that Gecom gave it some three months after the controversial May 11 elections.
The party has named its MPs, several of whom are utterly despised not only by party supporters but by the population at large, and by key “swing voters” who cannot stand the arrogant behaviour of some of the MPs. It was because of the behaviour of some of the named MPs that caused traditional PPP supporters to leave the party and vote AFC, and that brought about the party’s loss of office.
People (traditional party supporters) have expressed much disappointment in the choice of MPs for PPP. Party members and activists have said they were consulted on MPs for various regions but several “rejects” were named as MPs. The members and activists said several of their recommendations were bypassed and those who they specifically said they did not want as MPs were so appointed.
The views of activists and members were not given much weight. “Dem boys at the top nah listen to abbee at the bottom although abbee a do all de wuk”. This attitude was not dissimilar, they complained, in the selection of candidates for the election as well as how the party was governing during its last five years in office.
The views and opinions of activists and field workers were given lip service. The activists and party workers complain that the leadership chose whoever they wanted as MPs and rejected the peoples’ favoured choices.
People say if some of the MPs would apply for a real job in the private sector, people would not even give them a second look. Some are outright rejects not fit for the title of “’Honourable”. And they note a few carry the title of “Doctor” but people say they won’t even go to them to check their blood pressure. Some of the MPs “engage in promiscuous activities and dey only looking fuh gals” was a recurring complaint.
If the PPP is going to be successful at rebuilding, it must listen to its members and core supporters as well as grass roots activists. It also has to train future grassroots leaders, engage communities and recruit volunteers to advocate for the party and expose the problems of the other side (present itself as an alternative government). It must train and deploy field organizers throughout the entire country. It needs to build data in various communities and commit to reforms with renewed energy to attract supporters from the other side “to tune in”. It has to retire those who brought the party into disrepute, causing it to lose support. As it is right now, party supporters and activists are not hopeful that the party will undertake serious reforms to make it attractive to voters who abandoned it.
