Welch is MVP after scoring tournament high 33 points
National prospect Terron Welch hit in 33 game high points to lead the rampaging Half Mile Bulls to the championship title of the Linden Amateur Basketball Association’s Under 23 tournament last Friday at the Mackenzie Sports Club hard court.
Welch was later named the Most valuable Player as he added to this tournament high 33 points, seven rebounds, seven steals, six assists as the Bulls came from behind after the first quarter saw them trailing 5-10 and at half time adrift 32-35 before they rallied in the crucial third quarter.
The standout junior national player, Welch, led his team’s transition well and with solid support from Dennis Niles who netted 12 points to go with four rebounds and a similar amount of assists and steals, along with Travin Dryden’s 10 points and seven rebounds, while Jamal Bethune added eight points and five rebounds in addition to 12 steals, secured the win for the Bulls.
Initially, the Jets were off to an early advantage doubling their opponents’ score in the process 10-5 at the end of the first quarter, despite some excellent play in the paint by the Jets’ Adrian Webster who ensured they were still ahead at the break 35-32.
But the Bulls responded to the challenge and Welch and a determined Bulls side were able to turn things around in the pivotal third quarter period and take hold of the game when it ended 60-49.
During the fourth quarter it looked like a blow-out as the lead swelled to 21 at one stage but eventually the Bulls romped home winners 69-61.
The high scoring guard Welch took the Most Valuable Player prize after notching 33 points, to go with seven rebounds, and a similar amount of steals while dishing out six assists. Fellow junior national Dennis Niles had 12 points and collected four rebounds, four steals and four assists, as team-mates Travin Dryden got 10 points and seven rebounds and Jamal Bethune netted eight points, took five rebounds and stole the ball 12 times for the winners.
Adrian Webster played well for the Jets with 23 points and grabbed 21 rebounds with Parris Cadogan getting 11 points, three rebounds, two assists and two blocked shots, while Keith Butters also scored 11 points.
In the third place play-off game Victory Valley Royals took that position with a sound 66-40 victory. They had taken a 27-5, 43-15, 58-28 and then 66-40 through quarters. Keifer Tappin was the game’s best scorer with 21 points for the Royals and Nevin Glenn contributed 13 for the winners, while for the Raiders O. Williams got 10 points.
