A mixed team of local women’s footballers turned in a lukewarm performance and paid dearly for several tactical blunders with a 6-1 drubbing when it clashed with the Girls’ U19 squad out of the Fizabad Senior College FC, Trinidad and Tobago at the Tucville Ground last Saturday evening.
The occasion was hosted by the Fruta Conquerors FC and coincided with their August holidays programme where dozens of youngsters are currently undergoing training in football and other life improvement skills at the host entity’s Tucville headquarters.
One game later, Buxton United avenged the women’s loss with a 2 nil defeat over the Trinidad and Tobago men’s team. Dellon Wright and Elton Sullivan netted on both sides of the match to send the Buxton team across the line after the former player latched on to a loose ball and weaved his way down the left wing. He dexterously evaded the Trinidadians’ defensive cordon before unleashing a terrific strike from an acute angle.
The two teams battled on with the locals attempting to widen the margin while the team from the land of the Humming Bird worked to equalize. There were enterprising raids characterized by near misses but at the end the score line remained unchanged in that session with the most notable effort coming from Buxton striker, Maurice Barns who sent in a wicked kick from the centre of the field than narrowly missed its mark, sliding down the right side of the goal shortly before the whistle.
The battle continued into the second session and once again both teams, despite valiant efforts from their front men, struggled to get past the opposing custodian. Just when it appeared as though Wright’s effort would have been the decider, Sullivan displayed sound adroitness when he went up to a pass from Wright and ripped in a header shortly before the whistle sealed the Trinidadian’s fate.
The women’s match was a totally different affair as Trinidad, sporting an experienced lineup, humiliated their local counterparts with relative ease. Led by a double from Dennecia Prince, the Trinidadians enjoyed a field day after three other players scored. They were Collette Nicolleen Morgan, Rodessa Hackshaw and Krystal Preddie. A goal defection from a local player during a goal mouth scrimmage certainly did not help the cause nor did the inconsequential goal scored by local player, Tiandi Smith mere minutes after the second session started.
The action culminated last evening with the Trinidadians opposing two other teams and seeking to take home two beautiful trophies donated by corporate Guyana. Bakewell and Sterling Products also assisted with valuable contributions.
Last night’s games were also played at the Fruta Conquerors FC venue and the organizers have said that the exchange visit forms part of a programme of developmental activities for the club during this August holiday period.
