Although they had to travel long distances from several villages on the West Coast of Demerara, people turned up at the Uitvlugt Community Centre in their numbers with the common goal of seeking health care.
The occasion was a health fair spearheaded by the Region Three Health and Wellness Club with support from the Ministry of Public Health.
Although the group had anticipated that people would have turned up in their numbers to access the services being offered over the course of the day, they were so surprised when before noon a record number had already made their way to the Community Centre to be attended to.
Speaking to this publication yesterday Chairman of the Club, Kimani Urlin, disclosed that while the intent was to have persons access specific health services, it was observed that persons were keen on finding out about their general health. “People seem to want to have general health checks,” said Urlin of those flocking to the community centre.
In addition to a blood donation drive, the health fair saw services such as random blood sugar tests, blood pressure tests, Body Mass Index (BMI) tests and Visual Inspection with acetic acid (VIA) tests (test for cervical cancer) being done. Persons were also enlightened about the importance of diet and exercise.
Urlin was optimistic that at least a few hundred persons would have accessed the services before the health fair came to an end at 16:00 hours. But in addition to the health services offered persons were eligible for giveaways if they were able to correctly answer some heath questions.
The Health and Wellness Club, in the past, held health fairs at Parika and Vreed-en-Hoop, all in Region Three, and, according to Urlin, the decision to choose a “mid-point” venue was strategic in order to target a wider cross-section of people.
He disclosed that while other health activities will be held during the course of this year, the Club in the new year will seek to extend its reach to Riverain areas as well.
The recent event saw immense support from the Public Health Ministry as well as other private individuals with whom the Club has plans to have sustained collaborations in order to help fulfill its mandate of raising awareness about the importance of health and wellness.
