Young people from the Number Five District as well as neighbouring villages on the West Coast of Berbice, turned out in large numbers at the Number Five Play Ground on Saturday, in support of a fund-day organized by the Fort Wellington police, as part of their Partnership with the Community Programme.
The crowd at hand witnessed a few track and field events before viewing a friendly football match, featuring a Number Five under-17 team against the Number Thirty under-17 team. At the end of the day the officers distributed school supplies to the children present.
According to Assistant Superintendant of Police, Guy Nurse, who is the Officer in Charge of the West Berbice District( Abary to Ithaca), the administration of the force believes that positive social interaction between the police and the community can play a significant role in assisting in the fight against crime. He further stated that the objective of the initiative is to restore and build confidence in the police force in general.
ASP Nurse stated that he is quite encouraged by the response from the young people in the area, as well as the support received from the business community, and he is confident that there would be a significant turnaround very soon.
Young people can become involved in scout groups in each police district: Weldaad, Fort Wellington, and Blairmont. There are also youth clubs in each district, and young people are encouraged to get involved through the police.
Other initiatives employed by the police to build confidence in the force include face the community meetings, Community Policing Groups, and Station Management Committees.
