A first half strike by Sheldon Profitt handed Masjid-An-Najm of Albouystown a 1-0 victory over Old Mosque of Alexander Village in the final of Inter-Jamaat 7-a-side football competition which was contested yesterday in Albouystown.
Both teams had their fair share of possession and were denied on several occasions courtesy of some excellent defending before Profitt strike moments before halftime separated them.
Old Mosque tried desperately for an equaliser after the interval but sent several shots just wide of goal. They almost drew level minutes before regulation time, but Andre Sookdeo shot just brushed the upright; so close he came to score that the referee awarded the goal but disallowed it moments later.
New Mosque of Alexander Village copped third place after defeating Masjid Muhammad of Mandela Avenue 2-1. Keanu Legadeace and Rawl Aludain netted for the winners while their opponents had an own goal.
In the preliminary round games, goals from Profitt and Kenny Fraser gave Masjid-An-Najm a 2-0 victory over Old Mosque, while Masjid Muhammad beat New Mosque 1-0 courtesy of a Quacy Brown strike. Andre Sookdeo slotted home to give Old Mosque a 1-0 win over Masjid Muhammad who got the better of New Mosque 2-0 after goals by Profitt and Fraser, Old Mosque thumped New Mosque 3-0; Anthony Charles scored twice and Sookdeo once, and Masjid-An-Najm trounced Masjid Muhammad 3-1; Andrew Rodney, Fraser and Profitt were the goal scorers for the winners, while Quacy Brown found the back of the net for Masjid Muhammad.
The competition was organized by Masjid-An-Najm and sponsored by Trophy Stall, Mohamed’s Enterprise, Masjid-An-Najm, Betten Court restaurant and Fazal Naeem Grocery among others.
Iman of Masjid-An-Najm, Naeem Muhammad said the competition was part of a community project to develop sports and promote brotherhood. He expressed gratitude to the sponsors, congratulated the winners and other teams that participated. The Imam stated that they will make it a regular event with the next tournament slated for October and will feature teams from Charlestown and Ruimveldt etc.
He informed that Masjid-An-Najm has an active Judo club which consists of 15 members and a table tennis team, stating that they are looking to develop other disciplines such as Chess, Basketball, Karate and Cricket within the community.
Sport Director of the said Mosque Terrence Yussuf said one of their aims is to develop the skills of the players so that they can compete at higher levels.
Profitt was named the tournament’s most valuable player while the winging team received a trophy. Members of the top three teams collected medals.
