The mother of prominent Attorney-at-Law and Chairman of the Alliance For Change, Nigel Hughes, died yesterday following a horrible road accident Saturday evening.
Christobel Hughes 84,sustained her fatal injuries in an accident at the corner of Lamaha and Pike Streets, Kitty while she was on her way to her Subryanville home following an evening function.
The 82 year old woman was being driven home by her son, Stuart Hughes, when a pickup truck heading eastward along Pike Street slammed into their vehicle.
According to witnesses in the area, the force of the collision was so strong that it resulted in the Hughes’ car slamming into the nearby Natoo’s Bar, causing extensive damage to both the vehicle and the building.
From all indications, Mrs. Hughes bore the brunt of the impact since the pick-up hit the car on the passenger side, directly where she was sitting.
And although the elderly woman was treated in the Intensive Care Unit of a city hospital, so severe were her injuries that she succumbed yesterday morning.
Her son, Stuart, however escaped with minor injuries.
One witness said that the pickup truck was “in the wrong”, as the driver was required to stop before making his way onto Lamaha Street, since that roadway has the right of passage.
Witnesses also added that the driver of the pickup truck appeared to be drunk, and was speeding along Pike Street. After colliding with the Hughes’ car, the driver of the pick-up reportedly refused to exit his vehicle as residents gathered around the crash site.
It wasn’t until police arrived on the scene that the driver exited his pickup truck and immediately began using his cellular phone. When question why he refused to leave the car initially, the driver responded that he had cheques and bags of money inside that he did not want to leave unattended.
As the badly injured Mrs. Hughes was rushed to the hospital, her walking stick could still be seen inside the vehicle while the car radio could still be heard.
Saturday night’s fatal road accident comes as the Guyana Police Force (GPF) has recorded high rates of roadway related deaths. According the GPF statistics, there were 58 fatal accidents from January to the end of July. During that period, 71 persons were killed on Guyana’s roadway.
February was the bloodiest month on record with 14 deaths from seven road accidents. Meanwhile, speeding and inattentiveness continue to be the leading causes of road deaths.
