Urged on by a fair sized gathering made up mostly of parents and siblings of the players, Brandon Jaikaran’s X1 registered an emphatic nine-wicket against Nkosi Beaton’ X1 under lights on Saturday night at the DCC ground in a 25-over under-13 game as part of the club’s cricket Academy programme.
Under a cool night sky and with pulsating music coming from a Wedding in the upper level of the DCC pavilion adding to the festive atmosphere, the youngsters used the occasion to showcase plenty of raw talent which, if properly harnessed and developed, suggests the future of Guyana’s youth cricket is bright.
Pugnacious right-hander Dwayne Dick launched a brutal assault on the bowlers as he dominated a 141-run opening partnership with Skipper Jaikaran with a shot filled 106 before he departed with victory six runs away as Jaikaran’s X1 reached 147-1 in 19.3 overs in reply to the 146-2 in 25 overs made by Beaton’s X1.
Earlier, Garrick Persaud fashioned an accomplished unbeaten 69 and shared in partnerships of 69 with Shomar McLean (19) for the first wicket and 57 with Beaton (31) for the second as Beaton’s X1 posted what seemed like a very respectable total on a slow track.
Several catches were dropped but holding catches coming from a black sky under floodlights is not an easy task for much more established players and it was a learning experience for kids playing in such conditions for the first time.
Jaikaran was at the crease for 19.3 overs for his ‘Shiv Chanderpaul like’ unbeaten 12 with his only boundary coming in the 15th over but even as the more powerful Dick reached the boundary four times and cleared it on six occasions in their opening stand, Jaikaran played an intelligent supporting role.
The 12 years old demonstrated a wonderful temperament as he remained to the end to score the winning runs for his team.
Although Dick battered the bowlers with disdain in his century, it was 13-year-old right-handed opener Persaud who caught the eye with his elegant drives through the off-side and his willingness, at this tender age, to confidently use his feet to dance into the spinners. His boundary off the final ball of the innings was the shot of the night; an expertly timed ‘Dilscoop’ to fine leg.
The pair of nine-year olds, leg-spinner Stephon Sankar (brother of Guyana U-19 spinner Steven Sankar) and off-spinner Romero Deonarine (son of veteran softball player Rickey Deonarine) looked full of promise and showed why former Guyana off-spinner Gavin Nedd, Head Coach of the Academy, is an invaluable asset to the development of budding talent.
Persaud got going with a classy cover drive for four while his opening partner McLean chipped into Sankar and smashed the ball through the hands off the long-off fielder for another boundary.
Persaud used his feet to Aditya Singh and sweetly stroked him to the cover boundary as the partnership flourished before McLean fell to Christian Rodrigues in the 14th over.
Beaton joined Persaud and hit the first six of the match in the 18th over before hammering Rodrigues for four as the tempo ‘picked up’ after Persaud reached his 50, while Beaton hit the pint size Deonarine back over his head for six.
Needing to score at almost a run-a-ball to win, Dick looked positive from the word go; hitting a six in the first over. He then smashed Jason Holder for four and spanked Bobb for consecutive boundaries in the same over.
With Jaikaran being the silent partner, Dick reached his 50 in the 8th over before depositing Inderjeet Nanan for consecutive sixes in the 11th over. He then struck Nanan for six to reach his century before Nanan had the last laugh when the explosive Dick was caught in the deep at 141-1. But it was too little too late for Beaton’s X1 as Jaikaran, who favored the dab behind point, saw his team home.
