In honour of the cultural achievements on display at this year’s Emancipation Day celebrations, the African Cultural and Development Association (ACDA) recently hosted a Prizing Giving ceremony at its Thomas Lands, Georgetown office with Penda Guyan as Master of Ceremony.
During the ceremony, the cultural organisation recognised persons of exceptional talent and sports prowess as well as volunteers who helped in organising the Emancipation Day events.
The first group to be awarded the winning trophy at the event was the Farm Congo Group in the African Youth Groups Dance Competition. This was the first time that ACDA hosted a group dance competition, which was regarded as a tough category to judge as the competitors brought dynamic performances during each display.
Under the Best Costume Display category, the Divine Stars group accepted their first prize trophy in their creative and handcrafted outfits. The group was regarded as one of the more innovative competitors, as their costumes reflected in-depth research into the traditional wear of specific tribal groups in Africa.
Additionally, the Devine Stars group performed their winning piece during the award ceremony which was met with thunderous applause as it incorporated the techniques of young adults and children combined with the customs of African dance forms.
Meanwhile, musical artiste “Gadkid” was given the Young Gifted and Black Performer award. The Guyanese performer was praised for his “conscious” lyrics which advocates for the education of young citizens.
Some of the other categories included Best Dressed African Female, Male and Family which went to Simone Thompson, Maurice Primo and the Robertsons, respectively.
Moreover, the cricket team Brickdam All Stars and the football team Sophia Rest Team, were also awarded first place prizes in their respective fields, while the Waterloo Wars copped top position in the Domino Competition.
