– pass through building
As fate would have it, what could have tragically ended in fatality yesterday was restricted to minor damage to a Toyota AT 212 car.
The vehicle was parked in Kitty in the vicinity of the Guyana Defence Force
headquarters and was damaged by bullets.
Kaieteur News understands that the car belonged to a Stanley Place, Kitty resident who initially was under the impression that his car was hit in a drive-by shooting.
However, after noticing further damage, the man became convinced that there was something more to it.
It was then that he looked across the double carriageways of JB Singh and Vlissengen and noticed an unpainted building in the GDF compound with a few holes in the concrete wall.
Information reaching this newspaper was that the man then ventured over to the GDF compound and informed soldiers of the incident that left his car with bullet holes and a shattered window. It was only then soldiers realized that bullets being fired in the shooting range were piercing the concrete wall.
The man was then visited at his home by GDF officials who promised to replace his shattered car window and have the holes in the car sealed.
Kaieteur News understands that the indoor shooting range was recently constructed, but without reinforced walls or the special type of concrete blocks that would have been needed. It was also built without sandbags and without solid blocks.
The fact that none of the officers who use the range noticed the damage to the wall, baffles many. However, residents of Kitty are happy that no one was injured and the man whose car was hit is especially thankful that he was not in it at the time.
This newspaper understands that the range has since been shut down.
