Assistant Administrator of the Guyana Cricket Board Melinda Bishundyal-Chaitram has responded to an article carried in the Kaieteur News on Thursday August 13, in regard to young cricketer Kevin Sinclair not obtaining a British visa to travel with the West Indies team for an upcoming tour.
In her missive Mrs. Bishundyal-Chaitram stated, “I read in an article in your newspaper captioned “West Indies U15 selectee denied visa for tour to England…..Guyana Cricket Board failed to assist”, which was written by your reporter Samuel Whyte, dated Thursday, August 13, 2015, that GCB did not advise or assist Kevin Sinclair in any way to obtain his UK visa for the West Indies U-15 Invitational Tour to England.”
“I, Melinda Bishundyal-Chaitram, Assistant Administrator of the Guyana Cricket Board, personally assisted Kevin Sinclair to full out his UK visa application form. On the day we filled out his application, he came without his parent/guardian. I informed him that his parent has to go with him to the Embassy as he is underage. However, on the day of his appointment, he turned up alone and I accompanied him to the Embassy, in the absence of his parent/guardian. He was denied a visa on the grounds that he could not have established that he had parental consent to travel.”
She further stated, “The other two cricketers, Collin Barlow and Joshua Persaud parents brought them to fill out their application forms and also accompanied them to the Embassy, as advised by the GCB.
I also handed each of the three cricketers all the necessary documents to submit to the Embassy. The Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) did everything possible to help Kevin Sinclair but we are not his legal guardian and, in my personal opinion, the GCB sometimes go far and beyond its mandate to help. This is one such case.
Mr. Editor, I find your report on this matter to be biased, malicious and lack the basic journalistic ethic of getting the other side of the story before going to press.
I am hereby requesting that you give my response equal prominence published in its entirety.” Here letter concluded.
