An ex-soldier who was arrested after he crashed a hijacked car during a high speed chase earlier this week, has been positively identified by four victims.
Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum confirmed yesterday that the suspect was positively picked out on four of the five identification parades he was placed on.
The suspect is expected to be placed on further ID parades, as police continue their probe into a number of hijackings that have taken place within recent times.
“We are going all the way back to January,” the Crime Chief said.
Kaieteur News understands that police have received permission from the court to detain the suspect for another 72 hours without charge.
The man was nabbed on Monday night, after he had hijacked a car from a West Coast Demerara taxi driver.
He was briefly hospitalised under police guard after sustaining injuries when he crashed the stolen car in a bid to elude the police. Another man who was working as his accomplice managed to escape and is still being sought by the police.
Kaieteur News understands that at about 20:30 hours on Monday, taxi driver Lawrence Singh was hired by a man at the taxi base at Vreed-en-Hoop, West Coast Demerara, to go to Mc Doom on the East Bank.
Singh never suspected anything, until at Mc Doom, when another man armed with a firearm held him up.
The passenger along with the other man took away Singh’s motor vehicle, $10,000 and a cell phone.
During the robbery Singh raised an alarm and neighbouring residents responded and the armed man escaped, while the passenger drove away with the motor car.
Assisted by another motorist, Singh gave chase and the police also responded to the report made.
The perpetrator managed to make it as far as Sheriff Street with the stolen car, which collided with another motor vehicle.
