Police Progressive Youth Club is looking to re-arrest the Boyce &Jefford Track and Field title for a second consecutive year when the meet is held at the Mackenzie Sports Club (MSC) Ground, Linden this weekend.
Long-time Coach of the Club, Lyndon Wilson, said yesterday that his team has a great chance of defending the title they won last year despite the improved entries from their main opposition, the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) and Linden.
“I still think we have a great chance of defending our title. It is left to the athletes on the day to execute what we have been training them to do, which is win. Generally looking at the entries, there is a wide open chance that we can defend our title,” Wilson said.
He admitted that the soldiers are their biggest challenge in the club competition since he believes that “they are stronger now than in previous years”. However, he said that the Police “have their (GDF) numbers, but the title defence will be tougher this year.
The Soldiers had already said that they are coming to win and believes that they have the arsenal to do so for the first time in the competition’s history. Apart from them, the Police must contend with Linden, Mercury Fast Laners and Super Upcoming Runners.
“It’s going to be tougher than the previous years to defend our title. We have a few athletes to full some gaps, but everyone will give of their best. We have worked out ways and means that we will be accumulating points,” Wilson noted.
He said that he does not want to identify those ways to give anything away to the opposition, but asserted that the Police are much more tactical than in previous years. According to Wilson, the team has matured to understand that they compete to win.
“Years ago, we were dependent on talent, but now we are more tactical, we have the athletes to win, we have three athletes registered in all the events and we have urged them to ensure that they reach the finals in those events,” Wilson added.
Police Progressive Youth Club will be depending heavily on their Olympian, Winston George and last year’s international 800m winner, Kevin Bayley among sprint ace, Tevin Garraway to bring home the bacon this weekend in Linden.
The champion club will receive $600,000 while the runner-up gets $400,000; the third place club pockets $250,000 with fourth place taking home $150,000. In addition, $600,000 will be handed out in six international events, including the Asics Women’s 1500m, Under Armour Men’s 800m, Mings Products and Services Men’s 200m, Boyce/Jefford Women’s 200m, Brainstreet Group Men’s Long Jump and Women’s Triple Jump events.
