The Black Hawks Martial Arts Management Network Association has gained the backing of Edward B. Beharry and Company Limited for the staging of their third International Guyana Open tournament which is slated for Sunday at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
The company yesterday presented 150 trophies to the organisers at a simple ceremony held at their location in Charlotte Street, which will be given to the top three athletes in each event.
The entity has a rich history in its support for sports; the biggest being the Kashif and Shanghai tournament. Edward B Beharry was established in 1937 as an importer, wholesaler and retailer for food products and has now evolved into a group of companies. Among their brands are Champion, Chico and Indi with a variety in the Pasta, Confectionery and Spices line.
Brands Manager Debra Francis said they are pleased to be associated with the tournament. “We believe that sport is important to the development of the youths. It is a major unifying factor so we see it as investment rather than just a contribution,” she added.
Sensie Garfield Newton of the Black Hawks Academy said the event is the largest in Guyana with athletes from the host country, the Caribbean and North America vying for supremacy.
He pointed out that it will be used as a yard stick to select a Guyana team for the North American Federation of Martial Arts (NAFMA) World Championships which will be held in Trinidad and Tobago from August 21-23.
The divisions include Forms (open/traditional), Sparing, Self Defence, Team Kata, Combative Sport Weapon, Team Sparing and Grappling.
Admission is $500for adults, children under 12, $300 and action gets underway at 10:00 hrs.
