Cricket and Education goes hand in hand, it is very difficult to go places if you do not marry the two, were the advice of Minister of Housing Keith Scott to the youths attending the Demerara Cricket Club Academy.
The minister, who is also a member of the club, visited the academy yesterday and said he was heartened to see so many youngsters attending the programme. He added that the club has nurtured a number of outstanding cricketers and told the participants to take the game seriously. “I have seen so many players developed in such a short period so this clinic will help to enhance your skills,” he told the youths.
Scott lauded the executives for such a venture and urged the students to take their Education seriously. “I would often visit the club to witness the matches, and I am impressed with what I have seen. But besides playing cricket which teaches discipline, you must also take your education seriously,” he posited.
The Minister said that the Government intends to ensure that the youths be given the opportunity to excel in both sports and academics. “You will be respected if you work hard to attain greater heights and in this way your country will benefit from you. This club is the cradle for future West Indies teams and cricket and education will help you become well rounded individuals,” he explained.
Coach Garvin Nedd thanked the executives adding that it is a blessing to work with the students. He noted that it is a challenge but wants to mold the players so that they can grow from strength to strength.
Ex-Test Player Travis Dowlin said the sport needs the assistance of the Government to expand. “We all know the state of West Indies cricket at the moment so this course is instrumental in getting the youths to learn the basic which we think is very important.”
“We also want holistic development because cricket like life is about making decisions, so in order for you to make a decision that will be beneficial emphasis must be placed on your education.” He indicated that it is a privilege to work with the students which is a way of giving back to the club.
In closing, President of the club Alfred Mentore thanked the minister and all those who have assisted with the camp so far.
