Guyana’s lone FIDE (World Chess Federation) Instructor, Wendell Meusa, suffered a loss to Roy Sharma but rebounded to eventually amass 6 points and cart off the JB Championship trophy when the curtains were drawn on the inaugural James Bond Chess Invitational tournament at Congress Place Sophia, Saturday August 8 and 9 last. Sharma also scored 6 points but was relegated to the second place after the Swiss tiebreaking system was employed.
Cleveland Hutson accumulated 5 points after surrendering games to Muesa and Sharma and ended up in the 3rd place, while Davion Mars ended in the 4th place position after accumulating 4 points. Dr. Maria Thomas was the sole female competitor and she sealed off the 5th place due to the Swiss tiebreaking system after scoring a similar amount of points as Mars. The other points standing read Owen Mickle (3.5), Errol Tiwari (3), James Bond (2.5), Winston Williams, Dakari Griffith and Kibwe Copeland (1 point each).
The tournament was very competitive and consisted of eleven players competing over 7 rounds. The organizers said that there were complex applications as competitors exhibited different classes, strength and playing styles. They said that the contest was intense and mentally satisfying to each individual player because of its strategic time control which varied from five minutes per player to as long as one hour.
Meanwhile, the organizers have expressed deep gratitude to Attorney at Law, James Anthony Bond, who sponsored the tournament. Mr. Bond has recently started playing chess and was immediately impressed by its ability to foster all round development in young people. He said that the sport has the ability to enhance analyzing skills as well as creates intense focus and discipline. He has committed to similar ventures in the future. Activities were organized by former Junior and Senior Champion, Anthony Drayton.
